ARCTIC CIRCLE A whale shaped observatory
The Danish studio of architects Dorte Mandrup A/S will build The Whale, a building intended to become an observatory of whales in the Arctic; its shape will look like a huge tail of a whale. This cultural building will be located in the northern part of Norway, 300 km north of the Arctic Circle, one of the best locations to observe these mammals.
This project aims to increasingly know these animals and, at the same time, to protect sea life. Having a stone covered roof, the huge tail blends with the rocky landscape whereas its curved shape seems to move along the cost where it will be built. Inside, exhibition areas, offices, a coffee shop and a shop will be connected to the surroundings by means of huge glass walls. The project, which will come to an end by 2022, is a chance to foster tourism on the Andøya island that today counts 50,000 visitors every year.
